Das Institut für Sozialanthropologie der Universität Bern lehrt die Sozialanthropologie in ihrer ganzen Breite und setzt Forschungsschwerpunkte in den Bereichen Migration, Anthropologie des Staates, ökonomischer und ökologischer Anthropologie sowie Medienanthropologie. Ein Bachelorprogramm sowie drei Masterprogramme – darunter das spezialisierte Masterprogramm ATS („Anthropologie des Transnationalismus und des Staates“) sowie das internationale Masterprogramm CREOLE – bieten den Studierenden eine solide Grundausbildung und Möglichkeiten der Spezialisierung. Auf Doktorats- und Post-Doc-Ebene ist das Institut an mehreren interdisziplinären und interuniversitären Postgraduiertenprogrammen beteiligt.

Tobias Haller and Ilkhom Soliev (Unversity of Halle, Germany) are as Co-Coordinating Team of the Regional Chapter Europe and CIS of the International Association for the Study of the Commons (IASC) organizing the 3rd Colloquium Series on Commons and Policy (online, always on Fridays from 1-2:30pm between April 19 to June 7, 2024. Thematically, the focus is on crises we are facing around the world (e.g.,related to climate, biodiversity, migration, poverty, health, energy, etc). An der historischen Osterprozession in Mendrisio TI stellen Menschen schwarz geschminkt angeblich historische Figuren dar. Dieses sogenannte «Blackfacing» gilt heute als rassistisch. Die Organisatoren der Prozession wollten dies deshalb verbieten. Doch dagegen gab es emotionale Proteste aus der lokalen Bevölkerung. Dr. Rohit Jain, Institut für Sozialanthropologie der Universität Bern hat zu Blackfacing und kolonialen Symbole im öffentlichen Raum geforscht und ordnet die Debatte ein.
